While I'm not a big fan of Pete he WAS necessary and here is my reasoning why:
Sam has always thought that she needed the white picket fenced life: the one where she was married, had a house, and 2.5 children. Pete was a promise of that. But she still chafed at it and beat herself up over WHY she was doing that. She had a sort of a revelation and realized that she didn't need nor want that kind of life and it was okay not to want or need it. She gave herself permission to let it all go and when she did that she broke up with Pete.
Jack is a nice fallout from that but in my head he was not the reason she left Pete.
