That's actually Brian Blessed not John Rhys-Davies. Blessed has appeared in many Brit TV series and several movies, usually playing wildly over the top characters like Prince Vultan in the 80s movie Flash Gordon.
If you want to see just how much range Brian Blessed has -- way beyond the OTT bellowing -- get hold of the BBC series "I, Claudius". But brace yourself for a much younger Blessed . . . without the beard.
