As we begin our tale, Ernest Pratt, inkstained wretch and general soused layabout, is having a crisis. He’s got writer’s block, a recurring hangover*, a cranky publisher and a persistent publicist. Amongst other concerns, Ernest’s publishing contract requires him to dress up as his heroic character and do publicity appearances. Pratt’s own image is used as a basis for the book cover illustrations, and he often gets mistaken for his own character.**
